Branding for museum

Israeli Cartoon Museum

The Challenge

The Israeli Cartoon Museum has been operating in Holon since 2007 - a joint venture between the city municipality and the Israeli Cartoonists Association. Over 50 exhibitions, 20,000 visitors a year, educational programs, archives, workshops. By any measure, a functioning cultural institution. The problem was legibility. Caricature and comics are, by nature, a medium of critique - political, social, irreverent. But the museum's visual presence read like any other municipally-backed cultural venue: formal, cautious, and indistinguishable from the institutions the medium exists to satirize.

The audience for caricature and comics is not the audience that responds to municipal seriousness. But the museum had spent years earning legitimacy and an identity that leaned too far into playfulness risked throwing that away. The hardest design decision was how do you build something that comics fans immediately recognize as their kind of thing, while the museum still feels like a place that takes itself seriously enough to be worth visiting?
